Cornelia Baltes, “Ding Bats,” 2013
Limoncello, London
This square yellow painting stands on two L-shaped bits of frame, as if on two legs. It seems to be on the go, paying the gallery a short visit before moving on to more important business. Like most of this recent Slade graduate’s work, “Ding Bats” is confident, effortless, and fun. —Coline Milliard, BLOUIN ARTINFO U.K.

Cornelia Baltes: „Ding Bats“, 2013
Limoncello, London
"Dieses viereckige gelbe Gemälde steht auf zwei L-förmigen Halterungen als hätte es zwei Beine, es scheint davonlaufen zu wollen, als statte es der Galerie nur einen kurzen Besuch ab und habe Wichtigeres vor. Wie die meisten Arbeiten dieser Künstlerin, die gerade erst ihren Abschluss an der Slade gemacht hat, ist auch „Ding Bats“ selbstbewusst, von Leichtigkeit und unterhaltsam. – Coline Milliard, BLOUIN ARTINFO U.K"

In Baltes' works, daily life becomes a subject of constant wonder. She has a light touch and a keen eye for everything that is surprising and sometimes ridiculous in our world. Her photographs document mundane things like lit windows at nighttime (Dark Knight, 2012) or a plastic chain hanging from a stack of logs that looks like a smile. Her paintings use the medium in unexpected ways: Some protrude from the frame (Teaparty for Michael, 2011), others use murals as part of a painting installation. In 'There you are!', 2010, a large hand painted on the wall pints to a painting that hangs there. Simplicity and not overworking– these , she says, are the things "I need to nurture the most: keep it light and tight. Also, giving up on a misplaced investment in 'painting' has freed me to do as I feel." Beyond the fact that the works are witty and subtle, they also show a real interest in composition, color and texture, which makes them quite beautiful.

Darunter sind auch fünf deutsche Künstlerinnen, etwa Cornelia Baltes oder Lisa Wilkens..."

"In amongst all this, however, there are works that manage to linger in the mind. Cornelia Baltes' untitled (bird) is a strangely beguiling composition of a rook on a window ledge, subtly manipulated in post-production. From a quick look at her other photographic works, Baltes is clearly someone with an eye for an image and a knack for imbuing the everyday with something seductively misleading."
